Inns and taverns for travellers

The Merry Mage just south of Sarbreenar

TRAVELLERS to Sarbreenar usually look to stay at the Elk’s Roost, the local inn – ye know, a roadhouse sort of place. Ye can’t miss it; look for a muddy horse-yard by the road. ‘

I smiled. ‘One of those same adventurers told me there’s another inn just south of Sarbreenar, along the road. A place that burned down a year back, but had magics on its facade that kept them safe from the flames. A place called The Merry Mage ... a place whose signpost looks rather like a certain chocolate-loving wizard...’

Elminster growled. ‘The carved signpost of that ruin is NOT a portrait of me; it depicts some other winking, leering old bearded wizard.’

"That’s not what I’ve heard,’ I observed to the ceiling. ‘Why, Storm says you once had three lady friends in Sarbreenar, and when they all found out about each other, one let the others into your room at that inn, and –’

"My word, could that be the time?’ Elminster asked loudly. ‘I really must be off saving the Realms again, my dear chap; it’s been most kind of ye, to be sure, but – cheerio!’

There was a flash of blue light, a swirling of pipe smoke in its wake, and he was gone, just like that. His pipe hung in the air for just a moment longer, and then faded gently from view. Before it went, though, I could have sworn it BLINKED at me. Hmmm. Learning all about Sarbreenar was going to take time – and edibles galore – indeed. I sighed.

I really should be getting used to all this by now.
