The Merchants Arms
HE
MERCHANTS ARMS is Sarbreenars latest tavern, situated in North
East Sarbreenar, next to the Market Square (Map Ref: I1).
This G shaped building has recently come
under the ownership of Boris the Hat, one of Sarbreenars most
famed adventurers. The exact circumstances of how he came to own
it are unknown, though rumour has it that he received it as a gift
from the High Council in return for stepping down as a candidate
for future Mayoral elections. (That didnt work.)
The Merchants Arms, as befitting the style of Sarbreenar,
is a white walled building with black beams and a thatched roof.
The sign hanging over the entrance to the tavern shows two men seated
at a table, which holds a set of scales and several sacks of coin.
The actual building serves more than one purpose,
Boris proving once again that he can get as much use of something
as is possible.
Harbour Master: This
small section of building (the crossed loop of the G)
acts as the Harbour Masters office. The position of Harbour Master
falls to Boris, as Deputy of the Merchants Guild but it is a position
he doesnt desire or care for, hence the reason the office
is largely unoccupied.
The desk, although fairly large, contains nothing
except a chewed upon quill and a few scraps of parchment with doodles
on. The cabinets along the walls contain a vast amount of paperwork,
all of it needing work and none of it done.
A picture of Port Soy hangs upon the wall behind the
desk.
Main Tavern (Lower Floor):
The bottom section of the G. A two-storey section
of the building. The first things that strikes visitors are the
innumerable price lists covering the walls. Observant visitors will
note that the prices change from day to day. T he eagle-eyed visitor
will note that the range of goods that are priced changes from day
to day as well. Whether the goods are available from The Merchants
Arms or elsewhere is best left for the patron to discover.
Hanging from the ceiling are several of theitems that
are advertised and, like the price lists, these change from day
to day, as well.
The bar itself runs the length of the back wall and
is ably managed by Grumbleguts Grubb, a cousin of Precious,
Boris fiancée. Boris himself can usually be found occupying
a stool by the bar, talking to the patrons and enjoying the fruits
of his labours.
There is a set a stairs leading upwards to the private
area on the right hand wall.
Private Area (Upper Floor):
A private drinking area. Admission is by membership only. Few
are invited.
Stables:
The largest part of the complex, the stables form the upright
section of the G. The stables are used during the daytime
by the market traders, and at night by the patrons of the tavern.
They are also used by Grumbleguts as a sleeping place, which he
is seemingly happy to do, not caring much for soft beds.
A shallow hayloft exists above the stables, making them slightly
taller than one storey but not as tall as a two-storey section of
the building.
There is a gap in the centre of the stables that allows
access to the courtyard.
Courtyard:
The courtyard (the centre of the G) is the location
of the trapdoor that allows access to the cellar of The Merchants
Arms. The yard is constantly busy day and night with wagons unloading
their wares into the cellar, literally a 24 hr operation.
Cellar: Situated
underneath the courtyard it is a typically well-stocked cellar that
holds an enormous range of wines, beer and ciders from around the
Realms as well as other assorted goods. Curiously, there is a trap
door leading downwards within the cellar.
Private Quarters:
Forming the top of the G are the private quarters
of Boris and his adventuring companions from CoSL, although Boris
prefers staying in the palatial Chapeliers. A two-storey building,
it is divided up into well-furnished rooms for up to six people.
No details are available publicly of the layout of the inside of
the building.
