Take care to follow this advice to make sure your Bowen treatment is as effective as possible.

Bowen therapy pictureDo’s and don’ts after Bowen Therapy

On the day of the treatment only

Please don’t sit continuously for more than half an hour at a time. This doesn’t mean that you have to spend the whole day standing up. If you stand up and walk around the chair you were sitting on and then sit down again that is sufficient. Avoid long car journeys for this reason. You should also avoid strenuous exercise.

After or between treatments

Drink plenty of water – little and often is best
Do plenty of walking.
Practise any exercise you may have been set by your therapist

Avoid the following (preferably for one week after treatment)

Hot-water bottles/ packs of frozen peas
Electric blankets
Deepheat rubs
Long hot baths – a warm bath for no longer than 20 minutes is OK
Hot, hard showers – a power shower is out of the question –and Jacussis. A gentle flow, not too hot, is OK.

If your jaw has been worked on

Cut up fruit or other food that would otherwise require you to open your jaw widely. Don’t visit the dentist between treatments. Avoid yawning by clenching your teeth.

Any form of Bowen treatment

It is very important to postpone any massage, physiotherapy or other form of treatment until you have finished your course of Bowen treatments. Leave at least two weeks after completing your Bowen treatment before embarking on another therapy.

You may feel stiff and achy for a couple of days after the treatment. Don’t worry, this is normal. If you are in a lot of pain, please don’t rub the affected area but take a painkiller if necessary. If after five days you are still in severe pain, please do not hesitate to call me.

A second treatment is recommended, and needs to be given between 7 and 10 days after the initial treatment. Observing the above as much as possible will help Bowen to be effective.
